Tech: More iPhone Thoughts
- It's not clear to me that changed IMAP/SMTP mail passwords necessarily sync to the iPhone even if you change them on the docking Mac's Mail application. (This did work — and automatically, too! — when I first synced my iPhone back to my Mac, so everything just appeared to work like magic.) I woke up this morning to discover my work mail had been cut off even though I changed passwords (we're required to do this periodically); the most likely explanation was that the iPhone was trying unsuccessfully to access my work account, and as a security measure, e-mail access gets killed for a certain time afterwards for a particular account if there are too many bad attempts.
- The new, slightly larger headphones that ship with the iPhone are an immense improvement over the prior generation. In particular, bass response, always a problem with the old stock iPod/iPhone earpieces, is now very good. The only way to improve that used to be to get the in-ear phones, but they are just terrible for running, as they tend to dislodge enough after only a few steps to lose all their acoustic advantages. The earpieces stay securely in my ears, even while running, so physical stability is not a problem.
One minor downside: the new microphone/audio control halfway up the right earpiece cord means the anti-tangle slider can't do its job as well as it used to. Since multitasking won't be available for some time, this means I have a useless feature on my headset (I still use my first-gen 1 GB iPod Shuffle for music on my runs) that costs me elsewhere. Not a huge deal, though.
Helen reports that the new slightly larger earpieces won't fit in her ears comfortably, so people with smaller ear canals may have trouble.
I see that Apple has now got a second generation of in-ear headphones as well, and it might be worthwhile investigating that, too. These earpieces have a two-driver speaker, which must be a first; I don't know of any other manufacturer doing this.
- Apple's text completion is often right, but not exactly intuitive; I felt compelled to push the light blue text box under my partially-completed words, but in fact the thing to do is to hit the space bar. I only found that out after doing a Google search on "iPhone text completion".
- Is it possible to make your own ringtones without buying them through the iTunes store (and in effect, repurchasing music you already own)? It sure is, and using only iTunes, to boot. I spent some time last night doing this, and Helen was up even later converting her own music.
- Update: Apparently mobile commenting was just added over at True Blue LA and all the other SportsBlogs out there, including Halos Heaven. The interface is clean and necessarily slimmer; we'll see how well it works in practice. My main interest is using it from the games.
