And did I mention the Dirtbags swept UCLA in their weekend series? Surprising freshman catcher John Hill was a homer shy of the cycle in the first half of the doubleheader (hitting .522/.556/.652 in a small-sample-sized 23 AB), while OF Jonathan Jones was named Big West Player of the Week for going 7-for-12 in his last two series.

Two From Baseball America: CSUF Picks A New Coach, Last 2007 Hot Sheet
- Cal State Fullerton will hire UC Irvine coach Dave Serrano, upending a report last week that he had taken his name out of the ring for consideration. The move creates a vacancy in the Anteaters' suddenly impressive baseball program.
- Two Dodgers made the final Prospect Hot Sheet of the year:
13. Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Double-A Jacksonville (Dodgers)
Kershaw cruised through the Midwest League with low Class A Great Lakes, going 7-5, 2.77 in 97 innings with an appearance in the Futures Game before being promoted to Jacksonville. He had a wake up call in his first couple of outings, but finished 1-2, 3.65 in 25 innings. Kershaw finished the season 8-7, 2.95 in 122 innings with 163 strikeouts. He was third in the minors with 12.02 strikeouts per nine innings.
16. James McDonald, rhp, Double-A Jacksonville (Dodgers)
McDonald came out of nowhere and will likely rank in the Dodgers' Top 10 Prospects. McDonald, who spent all of 2004 and 2005 as an outfielder, went 6-7, 3.95 in the Cal League before moving to Jacksonville where he carved up hitters with his 89-93 mph fastball, curveball and plus changeup. After going 7-2, 1.71 in 53 innings for the Suns, McDonald ranked among the overall strikeout leaders with 168 in 135 innings.

- From the Monday Morning Ten-Pack, about Dodgers' recently converted second baseman Preston Mattingly:
The Dodgers made what looked like a questionable pick at the time by taking Mattingly in the supplemental part of last year's first round, but after an impressive showing in the Gulf Coast League last summer, as decisions go, it seemed sound. The spitting image of his father Don (plus three inches and 20 pounds), Mattingly got off to a horrible start in his pro debut, sitting at just .192/.241/.273 in mid-May. Drafted as a shortstop, but given no shot by scouts to stay there, the organization felt that Mattingly's defensive struggles--including an incredibly awful .773 fielding percentage--were affecting him at the plate. They moved him over to second base, and not only has Mattingly made just four errors since moving to the other side of the bag, but he's hit .349/.379/.578 since the move, now sitting at a respectable .265/.300/.400 and rising. Even at second base he's fringy with the glove, and most see him as a left fielder in the end, but the bat is back.

- UC Irvine beat CSU Fullerton in a wild one in which Anteater leadoff man Taylor Holiday tied a College World Series record for hit-by-pitches. Holiday was drafted by the Yankees in the 19th round; by winning 5-4, the Anteaters staved off elimination. It was the longest game in CWS history, according to Baseball America's John Manuel, running at 5 hours and 40 minutes, and included six UCI errors.

- A.J. Ellis was named Southern League Player of the Week for his 12-22 week that helped keep the Suns in first place. No Angel or Dodger player was named Pitcher of the Week.
