Luck, Be A Lady (Or At Least, A Halo)
Richard over on Pearly Gates goes after the chestnut that the Angels 2002 title wasn't due principally to luck. I would remind him that luck did in fact play a large factor:
- The team stayed mainly healthy. Anyone looking at Erstad's career would know he's had trouble with his hamstrings -- as he did in 2003. Sele was a notable exception, but he gave way to a far more effective Lackey.
- Several players had career years, including Benji Gil and Scott Spiezio.
- The declining Appier gave the team what was likely the last 14-year win of his long career.
- The Angels had remarkable young pitchers waiting in the minors -- including and especially John Lackey and Francisco Rodriguez, the latter arriving on the 25-man roster by a sleight-of-hand.
