Angels 7, Red Sox 6
I'll give Colón credit for facing the Red Sox, but at $12.75M per year, he needs to step it up. He needed to step it up about five starts ago. He needs somebody to keep those cheeseburgers out of his face.
Eck won this game. That last run in the 7th was the tipper. Percy owes Eck a couple rounds. And kudos to Mike for yanking Figgins at third and replacing him with Amezega -- and Alfredo making a terriffic leaping catch of a foul ball to end the game. Percy owes him, too.
When -- if -- Percy gets to 300, let's have a nice big retirement party. Giving up a two run homer to a guy who had previously gone 0-4 with two strikeouts is just embarrassing.
What a treat it is to watch Frankie -- and, increasingly -- Gregg -- on the mound. When Frankie's on, it's like Gagné was last year: strikeouts on three consecutive pitches. 7:1 K/BB ratio. And an ERA practically invisible to the naked eye. Here's his eighth inning, pitch-by-pitch:
Pitch 1 - Called Strike
Pitch 2 - In play, no out recorded
Kevin Youkilis singles on a ground ball to third baseman Chone Figgins. Kevin Youkilis advances to 2nd, on throwing error by third baseman Chone Figgins.
Pitch 1 - Called Strike
Pitch 2 - Swinging Strike
Pitch 3 - Swinging Strike
Andy Dominique strikes out swinging.
Pitch 1 - Called Strike
Pitch 2 - Called Strike
Pitch 3 - Called Strike
Johnny Damon called out on strikes.
Pitch 1 - Ball
Pitch 2 - Called Strike
Pitch 3 - Called Strike
Pitch 4 - Called Strike
Mark Bellhorn called out on strikes.
When he gets fatigued, he starts missing. Rested, the opposition can take their three hacks and sit down. Phenominal.
