A Handy Injury For The Angels
As for how this affects the Angels -- well, reading Elephants In Oakland's depth chart, the immediate situation is rather thin, with nobody obvious ready to replace Chavez for the three weeks or so he'll be out for sure. The thinness of the A's offense this year will be put under supreme test in the upcoming weeks. Mariners Wheelhouse ran a comparison showing why Oakland isn't as weak as everyone thought they would be after Miguel Tejada left -- but that was predicated on solid years from Chavez and Dye. Prior to the start of the season, Athletics Nation felt Chavez would have a career year in a contract year (though his contract was sewn up before the season ended). Now, Chavy was on a good, not great pace (.246/.372/.476) -- and for that reason his loss might not be as important to the A's as we might think. But it will most likely hamstring the A's in executing their usual second-half resurgence, especially if the injury lingers.
Suddenly, for the first time in a real long time, I think the Angels have a real chance to win the division, even with everything that's gone wrong.
Update: Will Carroll says that the injury is more like Jeff Bagwell's injury than Nomar's, and should be fine after he returns.
