Zen And The Art Of Pitching Prehab
ASMI and Barry Zito are the stars of this Wired article about pitching injury prevention. Check this graf:
The drills seem downright loopy to baseball traditionalists, who lament that the game is being taken over by number crunchers. But Peterson's pitchers are believers. Zito had surgery on his left knee in 1998 to repair dead cartilage. Even though he has been one of the most successful pitchers since, he altered his delivery this spring [emphasis mine] to take some strain off his knee. Zito wasn't having a problem with the joint; he hopes the change will prevent problems later on. "There's definitely a biomechanical aspect to the change I made," says Zito. "I'm trying to direct the momentum toward the target instead of lifting up my leg. That gives me more momentum, and it's less stress on the shoulder, elbow, and knees."Zito's last few outings haven't ended quite as well for the A's opponents as the Angels 4/23 hiding did for us. Is it possible his awful pitching was caused by his adjustment to these new mechanics? Whatever, I doubt we can count on him being that generous in the R column the next time we see him.
