Deal Time
ESPN's Peter Gammons claims the Marlins trade is on, as follows --
- Dodgers get former Cub Hee Seop Choi, Brad Penny, and minor league pitcher Bill Murphy.
- Marlins get Guillermo Mota, Paul Lo Duca, and Juan Encarnacion.
Stay tuned.
Update: Rotoworld reports the Angels have released Raul Mondesi after he failed to report for a rehab assignment.
Update: John's Dodger Blog passes on more from XTRA 1150: "Werth, Penny, Murphy, and Chuck Tiffany or Chad Billingsley for Johnson and Finley."
If true -- shite. As John says, this puts us in the playoffs.
Update: Brad Fullmer to the Padres, for a PTBNL.
Update dodgers.com:
- Dodgers get 1B Hee Seop Choi, P Randy Johnson, OF Steve Finley, C Charles Johnson, RHP prospect Bill Murphy
- Marlins get C Paul LoDuca, OF Juan Encarnacion, P Guillermo Mota
- Diamondbacks get P Brad Penny, P Edwin Jackson, OF Jayson Werth
- Rockies get PTBNL and salary relief
Comments:
Someone call the authorities, we've got a robbery in progress.
This looks like DePo's coming-out party.

Ask the Astros how much they miss Dotel and Wagner in their bullpen. I'm not convinced this is necessarily a good deal. More analysis later.
this is a disaster. It looks like when the dust settles we are trading Mota, Werth, LoDuca, Encarnacion Jackson and prospects for RJ, Finley, Choi, CJ and 1 prospect.
This is a total disaster. This mortgages this future, and doesn't make the team any better this year to boot. Someone did get robbed, and his name is depodesta.

Well, guess I'm the minority, but then again, I'm not like all the blind sheep that worships halfway-useless stats like .avg and "chemistry." sure, I'd rather have a clubhouse leader than a malcontent, but dodger fans are overvaluing loduca. the dude is 32, and he's doing his usual 2nd half fade. sure, I loved him because he had been with the team so long, but things change.
choi has shown he can be a power machine, and has several cheap years left. who would you rather have? mota or penny? I'd take the SP with pretty career/season good K/9, WHIP.
but that's just the (possibly) first leg of the trade, so that's all I'll say for now.
