Dodgers 11, Diamondbacks 0
Bob Brenly, Manager, Arizona Diamondbacks, 1998-2004: 303-262, .536 WPCTFiring a manager for the mistakes and failures beyond his control is all in a day's work for a struggling ballclub, and Brenly got nailed for his team's L column. So: is Pedrique to blame for the extension of the Snakes' losing streak? I can't fathom it, but so goes the thinking in pro ball; the team's in a funk, someone must be fired, and it would be the skipper.
Al Pedrique, Manager, Arizona Diamondbacks, 2004-?: 1-5, .166 WPCT
It's a bit like killing the fireman's dalmation because every time there's a fire, so's the dog.
But back to tonight's game. As I mentioned earlier, the Angels and Dodgers both had magnificent pitching from unexpected sources, with Ishii pitching his second complete game shutout. I was privileged to see his first such effort in person, a 9-0 shutout of the Giants. On the other side, Steve Sparks was awful, his butterflies so slow and hittable that the Dodgers feasted. As with Ishii's last such effort, Cora also homered, as did both Jayson (Werth) and Jason (Grabowski). Green, 3-4 on the night, showed flashes of the kind of hitter he used to be. All in all a good outing for the boys, and a much-needed series sweep, albeit against a less-than-stellar D'backs club.
