Nomo, No Mo

You say you don't love me
Well, that's all right with me
I'm not in love with you
I just want us to do the things we both want to do
Though I've got this special feelin' I'd be wrong to call it love
For the word entails a few things that I would be well rid of
I've no need to live in a dream it's finally real
And I hope you now understand this feeling I feel
You say you don't
You say you don't
You say you don't love me
You say you don't love me
You say you don't love me
Mmm
-- The Buzzcocks
The cliché, er, the writing's on the wall. Nomo, who throughout his career, had been a Giant-killer, had his last chance yesterday, and he choked. The warrior, proud but badly defeated in an ignoble year of awfuless, at last can't admit his career's over. The Daily News delivers the blow:
Nomo lost his ninth consecutive decision in a 7-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants in front of 47,081 at Dodger Stadium, and afterward, manager Jim Tracy didn't commit to keeping Nomo in the rotation.

Reporters were kept out of the clubhouse for 15 minutes after the game. And when the doors opened, general manager Paul DePodesta and assistant general manager Kim Ng emerged, presumably after a meeting with Tracy. DePodesta said he had to attend a meeting, and declined to answer questions.

Tracy had been tepid at best in his support of Nomo in recent weeks, and the end might be near. Nomo is making $9 million in this, the final year of his contract, but it's possible the Dodgers will release him.

As part of the process, Nomo would be designated for assignment and have three days to clear waivers. A team that picked him up would have to pay his full salary, or simply wait until he became a free agent and then sign him, likely for the major-league minimum of roughly $160,000 for the rest of the season.

Nomo, of course, continued to feel he was doing well. In this season's most appalling understatement, he said, "I don't think I'm doing bad, but the results just aren't coming."

Break out the sackcloth. Hideo, you've been a great guy, and we've had some great times together. Time to say, so long.

Update: On the Dodger Thoughts game thread for today, John Wiebe (of John's Dodger Blog) passes on a report from the Giants broadcasters that Nomo has been sent to the DL.
