Roster Moves

Veteran 1B/DH Andres Galarraga has signed a minor league contract with the Angels. IMO, this shakes out as follows: Erstad to CF, Galarraga to 1B, and Anderson to a platooned DH position with Salmon. Both Anderson (.327 SLG) and Salmon (.321) performed at about the same level of power in July (i.e., none to speak of). Yesterday's game underscored that. Moreover, anybody watching Anderson field in center knows he just doesn't have the speed for the position. Last year before the diagnosis of arthritis, maybe, but he's simply terrible now. With only a third of a season remaining, putting Erstad in center would improve our pitching staff's ERA by getting a legit glove out there.

Galarraga has some hope of contributing at a major league level, else why start him at AAA? This is to me a clear admission that the team's in some trouble. Quinlan's bat has proved a pleasant surprise, but as we discovered last year with DaVanon, you can't count on fourth outfielders hitting year-round. This comes in the midst of an already messy DL situation, with Benjie Molina missing two to four weeks (thanks for the heads up, Chronicles).

Another roster move of possibly no consequence is the addition of 25-year-old RHP Dominic Woody to Rancho. Could be an organizational move, maybe more. He was a fourth-round selection by Florida in 1999; he played in that club's minors for four years, and Seattle's for one. He has been a pitcher for all of two months.

Stephen Smith says Ben Weber is throwing bullpen sessions in Mesa. 6-4-2 wishes him all the luck in the world.

Update: More on this from MLB.com, including the callup of Wil Nieves from Salt Lake. "Nieves was batting .292 with nine homers and 45 RBIs in 336 at-bats for the Salt Lake Stingers."

Comments:
It could be a sign that the Angels are ready to move Erstad back to center, but I'd say it's much more likely that this is a sign that Bill Stoneman has no clue what he's doing.

Do you really think that Stoneman is making "a clear admission that the team's in some trouble?" I mean, he seemed pretty confident just a few days ago when he refused to make a move at the deadline. Why would he be in panic mode after one loss? All the talk about this being a "championship calibur" club could just be empty talk for the press's sake, but I've always had the feeling that the Angels management is just that dumb.

No, Richard, the team's been down on power for a while now; the Angels' July SLG is .398, 11th in the league and only above the Royals, Blue Jays, and Seattle. You don't sign guys like Galarraga unless you're desperate.

IMO they recognize there's a problem, but Galarraga isn't a credible answer to that problem.

Get Stoneman to talk to Bavasi. Maybe Randy Winn can clear waivers and he can take over in CF. (hehehe!)
