Dodgertown, Arizona

Comes the news that new weather patterns will make Florida into "a hurricane magnet" in the next quarter century or so, thanks to oceanic and atmospheric changes. Between Charlie, Frances, and now Ivan tearing through the state -- and the hurricane season not yet half over -- the prospect looms that Florida might not hold such an appeal as a place for the majors to hold court in springtime. Holman Stadium, home of the Vero Beach Dodgers, now can't host scheduled games thanks to hurricane damage. I don't count a sudden exodus from Florida to Arizona as likely -- not yet, anyway -- but one wonders how much of this sort of thing the big clubs will be willing to take, insurance or no. Arte's move to Goodyear is predicated on moving another team to the Tempe facilities now in use by the Angels. With friends like Charlie and Frances, it might take less prodding than it did even earlier this year.

Comments:
The Dodgers no longer own Dodgertown. They lease it from the local government for something like $1 a year. They won't be giving up that sweetheart deal anytime soon.

They might lease the facilities, but if the facilities cease to be there every year, it might make more sense to go elsewhere, regardless of who's paying for it.
