Eight And One: Padres 7, Dodgers 3

It’s probably not a concidence that the Dodger offense has taken off while their teammates on the mound have stumbled. It appears the National League West, not just Los Angeles, is running low on pitching.

So as we evaluate the Dodger pitching, let’s avoid doing so in a vaccum [sic]. An ERA in the neighborhood of 5.00 is nothing to shout about, but it isn’t as bad as it usually sounds. It might well be good enough to get Los Angeles into the playoffs (a battle for another day). And there’s also the possibility that Dodger arms will get healthier.

I made a mental note when reading this that the Dodgers' offense in September is being driven by surprisingly few players:

PlayerLine
Izturis.263/.288/.333
Werth.359/.419/.667
Finley.232/.259/.571
Beltre.327/.375/.519
Green.326/.426/.543
Bradley.273/.333/.386
Mayne.261/.393/.261
Ross.154/.267/.154

Which is to say, Finley's slugging but making outs, Beltre's slugging and getting on base, and Werth's having an anomalously good month. Yank Beltre from the lineup, and you've dropped a .375 OBP guy from the middle of the lineup. It just isn't going to work, and it didn't tonight. The pitching fell apart like a cheap sweater, but sans Belly, there wasn't enough offense to compensate, and the Padres had an easy win after Carrara handed them some gift runs. On the other hand, Alvarez's troubles seemed to stem from a series of bloop hits; luck sometimes eats you up.

Werth had a couple bobbles in the outfield that could have been caught, so I thought from our seats. Other than that and the lackluster pitching, the Dodgers played fairly well; the Pads were playing for their lives, and executed when they had to.

The seats: this time, I scammed a pair in the Stadium Club, first time I've ever been. Gorgeous, simply gorgeous, and the best seats I've ever been in in any sporting event. But, this makes me 8-1 on Other People's Tickets.
