Mariners 1, Angels 0

Anonymous homer bozos will knock me when I say the obvious. Sean might even question my timing. But a team that can't take a series from the bottom-dwelling Mariners doesn't deserve to go to the postseason, period.

Looking at the box score, nothing pops out: the team just didn't hit. Richard blames it on the offspeed pitch, but come on -- it wasn't invented last week. The real problem is this team has no patience; without looking, it might be the most hacktastic club in the majors now. Okay, looking, the club's strikeout to at bat ratio (SO/AB) is actually 2nd in the majors, only after Baltimore. However, the BB/TPA ratio -- the number of walks the club takes per plate appearance -- is also frighteningly low at .070, worst in the majors. Not much in the way of plate patience there.

Recap

Comments:
Lack of patience is exactly why they can't handle offspeed pitches. Yes, this team doesn't work counts, but they also fail to wait on offspeed stuff- another element of patient hitting. Hacking at anything resembling a fastball is team philosophy, and it's been that way for years.

But isn't that really a problem with pitch recognition then?
