Minor League Doings
Nate Silver on Dodgers, Angels Prospects
Jon points out a Baseball Prospectus article discussing prospects doing well... or not. Jon already discussed the Dodgers' prospects, including Loney, whom Silver nearly writes off. This being a combined blog, it's worth noting the big three in the mix:Dallas McPherson is one of my favorite prospects, and he has a good chance to crack our top five next year. PECOTA likened him to Jim Thome before the year began. His 2004 performance should do nothing to change that. ... Casey Kotchman is starting to look an awful lot like Mark Grace. ...Considering Grace's career splits, it makes J.T. Snow look positively Bond-ian by comparison.
Of the three top prospects, catcher Jeff Mathis was the only one to be left behind in AA Arkansas. He fell below his PECOTA projections, posting a .191 EqA, vs the projected .227 (.227/.310/.394 in real-world terms). That's a pretty big delta, but it's also a truism that catchers require more time in the minors than any other position. From that point of view, it's perhaps less of a worry, but still worth keeping in mind.
Minor League Affiliation Changes
The Giants shuffled their low-A club to Augusta in the South Atlantic League, reports Baseball America. There's still a bunch of clubs moving teams around, including the Devil Rays, Mets, Red Sox and Rangers. Also, the High Desert Mavericks have lost their affiliation with the Brewers, possibly to be replaced by the Blue Jays, and the Devil Rays want to move their Cal League high-A team back to the east coast.
Comments:
It's sad to see the team of my youth, the Bakersfield Dodgers/Blaze, getting abandoned once again. Can't blame the D-Rays or the Dodgers though. I mean, the stadium was built backwards for Christ's sake!
