Nomo Good, But No Win: Diamondbacks 3, Dodgers 1

The case in favor of The Trade -- which I earlier today declared to be unimpeachable -- looks even more solid with Hideo Nomo's loss today. While technically a quality start, against a badly banged-up Arizona lineup, he should have been cruising. And now with the news that Edwin Jackson has suffered a drop in velocity as well as a reduction in command, the Dodgers starting rotation -- not to mention their bullpen -- is looking more and more threadbare by the day. What should happen, say, if Ishii's back stiffness should prove more than transient?

The one part of the trade, however, that I'm increasingly inclined to criticize, is Choi. Not necessarily the need for the player so much as the player's play to date. As a Dodger, he's hitting .174/.322/.261. Whether he's pressing, needs more time in the minors, or is just this year's version of Greg Brock, something needs to give, and it's his playing time. Sure, I'd love to see him thrive, but the fact is he's not producing. After a month, it's "sayonara" or whatever it works out to in Korean.

Brandon Webb has recovered nicely from his awful May (6.55 ERA), posting a 3.62 ERA overall. Some guys just go through sophomore slumps, and as those go, it could be a lot worse. The Snakes took advantage of a shaky Nomo, who simply wasn't fooling much of anybody in the third inning tonight. He somehow got out of it, but the Dodgers offense was absolutely stymied by Webb and two quality relievers, Koplove and Aquino, the same pair that flummoxed them last night.

Recap

Comments:
I didn't see the game; stat-line aside, how did Nomo look? anywhere close to 2002/2003 Nomo?

I didn't watch it, and thanks to a bug on my work PC, I couldn't listen, but I did keep track on Gameday. He wasn't awful, but he did get into a lot of deep counts. He's probably got two starts left in him, and this was one.

Stymied by the umpire calling a phantom ball for the second night in a row. First it was Weaver supposedly hitting a batter with a pitch that *maybe* grazed his uni, and tonight it was Sean Green "interfering" with the second baseman just as Beltre was scoring. WTF?
