Pickoff Moves

Cap'n Happy To Miss Three Weeks

Kevin Brown will require surgery and will miss at least three weeks, and possibly the rest of the month. The fracture in his hand extends to his wrist. Brown is owed $15 million in 2005.

Pads Retire Tony Gwynn's 19

The Padres retired Tony Gwynn's jersey number 19 at a pre-game ceremony Saturday. The Jamesian Hall-of-Fame monitor at baseball-reference.com shows him having 277 points, a first-ballot HoF lock, but you never know. We have a couple friends in San Diego who are big Pads fans and have had season tickets since essentially forever. They also work with the Madres, an organization to help get kids the equipment and space to play the game. They've worked with Gwynn through that organization, and tell me he's a great guy who'll do anything he can to help them out. Congratulations, Tony.

Cubs Sidelined As Frances, Giants Erode Wildcard Lead

The Cubs' series with the Marlins was rudely interrupted by Hurricane Frances, making it all the worse that they can only watch while the Giants play the hapless Diamondbacks -- eroding their Wildcard lead. For a moment yesterday, it looked like the Snakes might put one over on the Giants and hold some of the Cubs' lead: up 6-1 in the sixth, Arizona starter Stephen Randolph loaded the bases for Marquis Grissom -- who put a charge in the ball to put it over the fence. The Giants came back all the way in the 8th with a four-run inning. The Giants are a half game back of the Cubs in the Wildcard, and 4.5 games behind the Dodgers in the division.

At this time it is unknown where or when the Cubs/Marlins series will be played. However, thanks to the Miami Dolphins football schedule, the easiest rescheduling would be to Wrigley Field, a move Florida would rather not make.

Recap

It's No Fun Anymore...

Tweaking Jeff Weaver just isn't fun anymore, especially now that he's 12-10 with a 3.60 ERA -- lower than four Yankees starters.
