Squish: Red Sox 4, Angels 3
Nothing to see here. Move along. Just another of Bart's non-quality starts. El Ladrón strikes again, and it's open season on the free agent bust. But just for giggles, let's look back in time, shall we? Back to July 30, 2003, when the Angels released Kevin Appier, eating $14.3 million on his contract. (Actually, it's a little less than that, but the difference is a rounding error.) At the time of his release, he sported a 5.63 ERA. Lackey, Colon, and Ortiz are all within a half-run of that figure at this moment in time. Lackey's had a bad year -- again. Ortiz we dismiss as either (a) a very good bullpen pitcher or (b) a headcase starter. Both these guys are cheap. Colon is not, and the team won't just expel him the same way they did Appier. It's too expensive, he's too young to give up on, and he's fairly close to some very good seasons.
In other news, the Angels picked up RHP Scott Dunn. Dunn has a 3.21 ERA, 10-4 for the Stingers in 46 games, starting in 6 games, with 84 strikeouts and 56 balls in 89.2 IP, for good-looking peripherals of 8.43 K/9 and a 1.5 K/BB ratio. Acquired in the trade with the Chisox that sent Scott Schoeneweis away, he was originally drafted in the 10th round by Cincinnati in 1999.
But something has to change.
Well, so much for the Wild Card. Glaus, while a welcome addition, isn't enough, Guillen and Guerrero swing at too much stuff out of the strike zone, and I need a break.
