Admonitions: Red Sox 8, Angels 6
You might be tempted to think I'm unhappy with the Angels losing, and the Red Sox advancing. Not really -- I predicted that. In fact, it's probably best that they beat us on the first pitch of Washburn's relief appearance.
Arte and Bill Stoneman have had a message delivered to them with unmistakeable clarity. The Angels never held a lead in this series. They didn't win a single game.
Time to get started.
- The bench is weak. It wouldn't have been this weak if we hadn't had so many injuries, but Alfredo Amezega has no business being on a major league team in any capacity other than as a defensive replacement; as a starter he's useless. Figgins is a good baserunner, but his defense is simply mediocre.
- Move Guillen. Guillen's suspension was the right thing to do. As I mentioned earlier, this could be the beginning of something beautiful. Unfortunately, it looks like the team is sending smoke signals that they're going to take him back next year.
- Fix the rotation. The problem with this is Colon's late season recovery -- he's the first pitcher in some unreasonable number of years to have an ERA of 5.00 and 18 wins. The great fear is that they'll think he's now an acceptable guy to carry and that they don't need to deal with the obvious problems in the rotation.
- Fix the bullpen. Who'd ever think I'd write those words? Yet with K-Rod a possible replacement for Percival, the fear is that we now no longer have anyone capable of dealing with tough outs in the 7th and 8th innings. Also, Gregg isn't exactly fantastic, and Donnelly may never return to his 2002/2003 form.
- Fix centerfield. Anderson just doesn't belong there, period.
