Pickoff Moves
Astros 5, Cardinals 2
The Rocket finally corrected course and got through seven to give Houston its first NLCS victory -- and Phil Garner his first game without copious second-guessing. The bullpen isn't just Lidge, though -- we've already found that out -- and faced with a shorter outing by one of his starters, he's shown the book rules his decision-making, leaving Tony Larussa a nearly-guaranteed win. The biggest drama of the game came in the sixth, when the Rocket had to retire the heart of the order. He did so, but not without first walking Scott Rolen, always cause for alarm with the Cards' lineup.Benjie Molina, Free Agent
Richard and Chronicles have been busy with their offseason analyses, and so far a commendable job by both. (Particularly of interest was Richard's putting numbers to the claim that Erstad is "worst everyday firstbaseman" in baseball.) But here's one I bet you didn't know: according to this story, Benjie Molina is free agency eligible. I think he managed to miss just about all the free agency lists I've seen this year, but his absence would create an enormous hole for the Angels. With super-prospect Jeff Mathis about a year behind schedule, this creates a big problem for the Halos: re-sign Molina to the multiyear deal he's almost certain to want? Or cut him loose and go with light-hitting Jose Molina and Josh Paul? (Come to think of it, was that yet another motivation for signing Paul in the first place?)Guzman Gone
Those thinking about unloading David Eckstein for a higher-priced yet worse-hitting model will be pleased to note that Christian Guzman of the Twins has been cut loose, primarily due to cost considerations. Sure enough, the Twins are likely thinking about bringing up Jason Bartlett as their everyday shortstop.
