Still More Pickoff Moves

Stuff I forgot about last night --

M's Manager Bob Melvin Fired

Ah, yes, the old fire-the-manager-to-save-your-job maneuver. U.S.S. Mariner engages in rampant speculation as to who the next guy will be, with a lot of nose-holding; the only ex-manager to get the nod is ex-Astros manager Larry Dierker. Of Angels bench coach Joe Maddon, he says "Maddon apparantly keeps track of a bunch of stats he’s made up on the team, like 'keep-alives' where you get on base after the guy in front of you makes an out. That’s exactly the kind of weird, stats-to-support-assertions thing we don’t need." Ugh. Now where's that Prozac?

Monkeywrenching The M's In 2005

Speaking of the M's, here's a glossing over at U.S.S. Mariner of offseason moves, and every one of them is predictable. Still worth reading, though.

The Angels Just Aren't That Good

Ben Jacobs at Hardball Times agrees with my overall assessment of the Angels: they just aren't that good. Whether it's team defense (mediocre) or run scoring (mediocre), the club has some big holes that injuries magnified. Furthermore, Rich Lederer observes that the Halos' starting postseason infield hit a grand total of 16 homers; "[you] would need to go back to the 1988 Dodgers to find such an inept-hitting infield that started during the postseason." Lederer uses this riff to speculate on such matters as whether the team will sign Nomar Garciaparra in the offseason, whether they'll resign Glaus, and a host of other player matters. My great fear is that the team will take their appearance in the postseason as validating their current strategy, and will let Glaus go, will pray McPherson realizes his potential at third next year, will keep Erstad at first and Guillen at left (and therefore -- ugh -- Anderson at center).

Red Sox in four, say I; and of course I'm going to tonight's game, so I'm cursing them in person, the same way Richard has. At least I'm not alone in that.

Whisper To A Scream

"A Dream Season For McCourt" says the Boston Globe, but those of us who are Dodger fans wonder whether it's the last one for a while. After showing up at the usual 3,000,000 clip in the turnstyles, will Frank turn that into the kind of commitment to players we expect? Or is this the last hurrah of the Dan Evans and -- gulp -- Kevin Malone rosters?

How The Angels And Dodgers Clinched

Studes at Hardball Times shows how the Angels and Dodgers changed their probabilities of winning in their respective division-clinching games. For the Dodgers' Saturday 7-3 romp against the Giants, the more dramatic of the two games, the key plays were Werth's single, and the error by Cody Ransom, in descending importance. For the Angels, the key play was Erstad's double followed by Anderson's single.
