How The Tortoise May Catch The Snake

An interesting article in the Houston Chronicle about how Tim Purpura should go about negotiating with Scott Boras over Carlos Beltran's continued wearing of an Astros uniform:
I'm guessing the Astros are not the team Beltran intends to play for next season. That's just a hunch because he never has said a negative word about the Astros, and I believe he enjoyed his time here.

I also think he's more interested in the Angels and maybe the Yankees. I think the Cubs will be players, too.

I believe he'll listen to a pitch from the Astros, then spend six weeks shopping for a better one. Inside the industry, the gossip is that he'll use the Yankees to get a sweeter deal from the Angels.

This is a game the Astros cannot and should not play. They have other needs. They have other options in center field, but those options might be gone if they allow the Beltran auction to last much beyond Thanksgiving.

So McLane has to be fair with his best player, and then — and here's the hard part — he has to be prepared to move on.

Interesting stuff, but I still think Beltran's an Astro next year.
