Hunsicker Resigns As Astros GM, Snakes Hire New Manager

I guess this means Carlos Beltran will not appear in an Astros uniform next year:
"It has been an incredible nine years, and when I look back I will take with me a lifetime of memories," said Hunsicker, who had the job for nine years.

Tim Purpura, Hunsicker's assistant and the team's director of player development, will succeed him immediately.

"I have very large shoes to fill," said Purpura, who has been with the Astros for 11 years.

Why does that sound familiar? Which is to say, it's a good time to let somebody else take the pending kick-in-the-teeth once the club announces Beltran's negotiations have collapsed, much as Gillick found the 2003/2004 offseason a good time to retire once it became obvious the club's core had turned rotten.

Also available at the Astros website, along with an interview with Purpura, in which owner Drayton McLane says

"All of the players have very able and capable agents," McLane said. "We have to work though the agent. Gerry has visited with Scott Boras, and he is a very experienced person. He's outlined that he, in the next few days, will be meeting in Puerto Rico with Carlos and Jessica and they will determine what the next step is.
According to a Houston Chronicle story, "Beltran said he wanted to listen to the Astros, but they gave him no indication they'd travel to visit him." Interesting.
In Arizona, the Snakes have hired Wally Backman as their new manager. U.S.S. Mariner comes out swinging:
Think Larry Bowa; than take away logic, sanity, and strategical knowledge. Wally Backman is instantly the worst manager in MLB. Well done boys.
Yowch. I expect more from Random Fandom and But It's A DRY Heat later.

Comments:
I wish David Cameron would come out of his shell. You know, tell us what he really thinks about the Backman hiring.
