Pickoff Moves

Tracy Negotiations Drag On

The Daily News reports that Jim Tracy's contract expired Monday, so he may pursue negotiations with any team. In what's certain to be a disappointment to Fire Jim Tracy, DePodesta is confident Tracy will return:
On the Dodgers' managerial front, general manager Paul DePodesta said negotiations with Tracy have intensified, and he reiterated his belief that the sides will come to an agreement. What DePodesta didn't say, but what has become rather obvious, is that the process has taken much longer than anyone originally hoped it would.

"We continue to have conversations," DePodesta said. "I think we made it clear we want him back and feel very confident that we'll get something done. We have talked more (in recent days) and are farther along than we were."

Dodgers May Pursue Glaus

The Dodgers pursue Troy Glaus as a possible alternative to Adrian Beltre in the event the club can't come to terms with the Scott Boras client. Not a bad idea, considering "[t]he only other high-quality third basemen available in free agency are Corey Koskie of the Minnesota Twins and Vinny Castilla of the Colorado Rockies."

Dinner In The Garden Of Good And Evil

Tommy Naccarato writes to let me know Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities (RBI) is hosting a series of fundraising dinners at $600 a plate, to be held at Cannery Seafood of the Pacific, on the wharf at Lido Isle. Guests will include superagent/weasel Scott Boras, and Dodger greats Maury Wills and Don Newcombe. Nolan Ryan may also attend one or more of these events. All dinners will be hosted by two-time NL batting champion Tommy Davis. The price is a mite steep for my blood, but hey, it's charity. Inquire within.

Shawn Green To The Mets?

The Times story above about Glaus has a brief mention of Shawn Green: "DePodesta said he would listen to trade offers but denied rumors he is actively trying to dump the contract." Heh, those rumors coming from, where else, New York, thanks to the Post...
[H]ow about Shawn Green as a Met? The Dodgers want out of his contract and an NL GM said Green has grown disenchanted in L.A. The AL executive who confers with Minaya said the Met GM is determined to "make a splash," which is why you are hearing Manny Ramirez and Sammy Sosa. If those fall through, watch for Green.
I swear to God, I can't make this stuff up. Thanks to BTF Primer for this one.

Pedro To Yanks Talk Heats Up

In this Hartford Courant story discussing the possibility of Pedro to the Yankees:
Signing Martinez would be a multifaceted coup for Steinbrenner. First, he would add a top-flight pitcher and another big star, one who would create a theatrical event every fifth day. Second, he would be taking a 16-game winner, as well as an icon, away from the Red Sox.

It would also put the Yankees on the giving instead of receiving end of the brushback pitches that have marked this rivalry - and helped turn it in Boston's favor - in recent years. It also could spoil the Red Sox's party next April when, while handing out their championship rings at the home opener, they'd be calling Martinez out of the Yankees dugout.

The risks are also high. Martinez, 33, has had only one 20-win season since 1999. He lost his last four starts in September, and was so-so in the postseason until he shut out the Cardinals for six innings to win Game 3 of the World Series.

What kind of a universe does George live in that winning 20 games is a requirement to sign with the Yankees?

Sexson Rejects Diamondbacks' Offer, Negotiations Continue

Thanks to Random Fandom for this Arizona Republic story about negotiations between Richie Sexson and the Snakes. Sexson rejected a contract giving him $10M next year and an undisclosed number of dollars over three years. His agent is Casey Close -- not Scott Boras -- and the two sides are still talking during the team's window of exclusivity, which means there's a decent shot both sides will come to an agreement before long.
