Vote Porter!

The Ford C. Frick awards are up for nomination, and you can vote, once a day, for any three. Ross Porter is one of the nominees, as is the late Jerry Doggett. "The top three vote-getters will be placed on the final ballot for consideration for the 2005 Ford C. Frick Award, presented annually to a broadcaster for major contributions to the game of baseball." Current Dodgers broadcasters Vin Scully and Jaime Jarrin are already in the Hall of Fame as broadcasters; getting Porter in would be a nice encomium after his unceremonious deportation from the Dodgers' broadcast booth.

Comments:
And I would ask, if you've not thought of another name to fill out one of the spots of three, that folks consider voting for Steve Stone.

Stone has worked for 21 years, all with the Cubs. His original broadcast partner was Harry Carey. Like Porter, Stone was treated badly this year and will not be back with his long time team in 2005. (Stone resigned.)

Unlike Porter, Stone's nemesis were the players, who instead of accepting their own mistakes would harass and even threaten Stone and partner Chip Carey for on-air comments the players deemed inappropriate. The problems spilled into the Chicago media, and the whole affair got quite ugly. Through it all Cubs fans were unwavering in their support for Stone, appreciating his honesty during a difficult season.

Stone is the best color commentator I've ever heard. He calls pitches and outcomes so often you'd think the telecast is on a 45 second delay. His knowledge and skill are one of the reasons I'm a baseball fan, and he's surely the source of most of my knowledge of the game.

My pie in the sky wish is that the two men would exchange jobs this offseason. I'd like to continue listening to them both for years to come. So please vote the dual ticket of Porter/Stone for the Frick nominations.

Thanky muchly,
-Helen, Rob's wife
