Buh Bye, Belly
Panic in the streets of LAScrew you, Adrian Beltre. Screw you, especially, Scott Boras. It's on the M's website, so this is about as close to official as it gets. 5 years/$60M+.
Panic in the streets of Dodgertown
I wonder to myself
Could third base be the same again
Frank: you have been duly served.
DePo: this is where it gets, um, interesting. You let Hudson go to the Braves.
Christamighty, is Bill Stoneman really a better GM than the vaunted Paul DePodesta?
"You can't come into this with a Pollyannish attitude that you'll definitely have him back and get every other player you want, too. You have to be prepared for the worst. Now that we're actually here, and with trade talks on top of it, we have other options. If we're forced to, I don't feel we'll be left standing without a chair when the music stops."Sure. We'll have a chair. In fact, Paul, you'll have a whole stadium full of empty ones. In the meantime, we've got James Loney, and he's gonna save us in, what, 2006? We spend four years tearing our hair out with Beltre at the plate, the jackass gets good -- conveniently enough, in his walk year -- and all of a sudden he's too rich for the Dodgers? For the Dodgers? The hell?-- Paul DePodesta, on losing Beltre
Forget all that stuff I said the other day about not knowing whether signing Beltre to too many years is a good idea or not: this hurts.
So this is what it feels like to be a Royals fan. Thanks, Frank. Thanks a lot. And thank you, too, Bud, for handing the team over to a bankrupt, platitude-spewing nitwit.
Moneyball, my ass. If you don't have the money, you ain't goin' to the ball, that's what that is all about, my friends. And the Dodgers, apparently, don't have the money.
You can bet Plaschke and/or Simers will be all over this tomorrow. Under normal circumstances, I cannot stand Plaschke's awful one-sentence paragraphs and Simers' sulfuric acid cynicism, but for once, I can't wait.
Ah, what the hell, by 2007 the world's oil production will have started declining, the international trade system will stop functioning, and we'll probably be at war in the Middle East again. Sheeiit, there's just too much else to worry about for Beltre to be all that important, but man, when even baseball starts to suck, life's taken a turn for the worse.
