D.C. Council Develops Spine, Demands MLB Pay For Stadium

The D.C. City Council anomalously demanded the owners of the Nats pay 50% on any stadium deal.
"My basic belief is that there are too many public dollars going into this," [Chairman Linda W.] Cropp said. "This will make the mayor seek private dollars more than anything else. I don't know how Major League Baseball will react."
This is unexpectedly good news. Baseball has operated like an unwelcome houseguest in D.C., coming in and demanding all kinds of public subsidy; there's no excuse for that. Amazingly, the D.C. City Council's principled stand, while late in the day, is still better than never; public money shouldn't subsidize the toys of rich folk.
