MLB Takes Washington Baseball, Goes Home
Pout, pout, pout. Now the Nationals are the Nowheres, and if it seems a little unseemly that the viziers of baseball have decided that a team without an owner needs an expensive, publically-funded box to play in, they first need to ask themselves what are they going to do about paying those former Expos' salaries. Nats Blog wants to blame Linda Cropp, but the fact is, MLB is in a tighter corner on this one than the city of Washington. Baseball's nabobs will cook up some face-saving figleaf and come crawling back to play in RFK Memorial Stadium, where they can at least earn a few dimes. It's better than putting the team up on cinderblocks in the front yard, or hoping to resurrect Griffith Stadium. Contraction is not an option per the current Basic Agreement, and it's too late to move elsewhere.
Meantime, all the other wannabes from Virginia to Vegas to Oregon (sorry, no v-alliteration there) are starting to lick their chops again, as though getting a boot to the head were worth something.
