More Random Signings
Random signings:
- The Cubs inexplicably signed former Dodger backstop Henry Blanco, presumably to replace the not-appreciably-different Paul Bako.
The Cubs also signed Nomar Garciaparra to a one-year, $8M deal. The former Boston shortstop could earn as much as $11M if he meets performance incentives. Second baseman Todd Walker will also return to Wrigley, this time as a starter. Former Dodger and second baseman Mark Grudzielanek was not offered arbitration, and is a free agent.
- The Yankees have agreed to a three-year, $22.5M deal "comparable" to Kris Benson's with RHP Jaret Wright, according to the Washington Post. They have also signed former Cardinals 2B Tony Womack to a two-year deal. "The Yankees had been expected to re-sign free-agent second baseman Miguel Cairo, but turned to Womack after those talks stalled", wrote Ken Rosenthal.
- Former Angel Orlando Palmeiro has re-signed with the Astros, says Rotoworld. Also, free agent 2B Jeff Kent was not offered arbitration.
- The Mariners have re-signed Dan Wilson. The Associated Press reports the deal is one year and $1.75M. Wilson is the last remaining player who dates back to the Mariners playoff teams of the 90's.
- Former Dodger Jeromy Burnitz was not offered arbitration by the Rockies.
- The Royals have signed former Angel Kevin Appier to a minor-league contract.
- The Cardinals offered catcher Mike Matheny arbitration, claims Rotoworld. The catcher has been talked of as a possible starter for the Dodgers, but it's questionable if DePodesta will give up a draft pick for him.
- The Blue Jays decided not to give arbitration to slugger Carlos Delgado. Delgado is being pursued by the Mariners and Rangers thus far, and the Orioles and Mets are also interested. Delgado sounded unhappy with the entire circumstance of his departure:
"They've been butchering it up with Carlos for a long, long time. I don't think J.P. Ricciardi has ever wanted Carlos around, from the day he stepped off the plane to take over in Toronto."
