Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition

Giants Sign Matheny

The Giants went ahead and signed former Cardinal catcher Mike Matheny, for three years/$9M. It almost certainly means the Giants are looking to move noted loudmouth A. J. Pierzynski for whatever they can get, probably relief pitching.

The Lederer Hit Parade Keeps On Rolling

Now this is funny.

The Angels' Depth Charge

For all that it's scary times to be a Dodger fan at the moment thanks to all the unfilled holes they've introduced this offseason, the Angels now have a noticeable glut at several positions. Under somebody else's watch, you might consider it a good thing, but not necessariliy under Bill Stoneman: he's so averse to trades, the only thing you can realistically call guys like Kendry Morales is depth -- i.e., insurance in case Anderson goes all rheumy on us again. How, you might ask, will Morales adjust to major league pitching if he doesn't see any of it? And will Robb Quinlan ride the bench or is he liable to also spend even more time in AAA waiting to become another Rule 5 draftee/minor league free agent?

Another Gloomy Outlook On Finley

This time it's from Joe Sheehan, who labels Finley's defense in centerfield "below average". He goes on to say the biggest problem is that Fins is essentially bolted into center thanks to Anderson's immovable contract and Vlad's productivity. Ultimately, he calls this a "high-risk" deal for the Angels. I've dropped Joe a line to ask what metrics he was using for assessing fielding (I use RAR2, which doesn't look too bad), and hope to hear from him soon.
