Pickoff Moves

Mariners Sign Sexson

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports free agent first baseman Richie Sexson has signed with the Mariners, contingent on his passing a physical. No terms were disclosed, but the contract is believed to range from 4 years/$40M to 5 years/$60M. The team website acknowledges the report but refuses to confirm it. I'll let Will Carroll speak to the quality of this but if the reported terms are anywhere near accurate, I don't believe it's a good deal for the M's, considering the risky nature of his shoulder. Jeff Shaw has already come out against it, as has David Cameron at U.S.S. Mariner. In fact, both hope Sexson will fail his physical.

And Then There Was One: Koskie Signs With The Jays

Paul DePodesta's game of musical third basemen has started to run its course as former Twin Corey Koskie signed with the Blue Jays to a three-year, $17M contract. Is it a good deal? I'm not sure, but I think it depends on whether you use Canadian or U.S. home runs to figure his worth.

You Can Ring My Beltre

Ken Gurnick reminds us that neither the Hudson deal nor any Beltre signing has taken place yet. As usual, Boras shows no fear:
"At the prom, you get caught kissing a lot of friends, but it doesn't mean marriage," Boras said of the Dodgers' courtship of Koskie.
The idea of anybody kissing Boras -- well, let's just call it the least romantic prospect since Phyllis Diller. Gurnick goes on to say that Seattle and Detroit are also in the mix, which is to say, Seattle is in the mix. Yet DePodesta's posturing borders on the absurd:
DePodesta said he has not felt pressure to bring back Beltre "once we signed [Jeff] Kent. We have our insurance. But we still want Adrian back."
If that's insurance, you'd better hope you don't get into any accidents -- like the regular season. Meantime, the Dodgers are out of the Matheny bidding, but are reportedly pursuing begoggled Met catcher Jason Phillips, whose .218/.298/.326 line will no doubt also be referred to as "insurance". Do you think we can get John Garamendi to investigate the Dodgers over this double indemnity?
