Pickoff Moves

Rangers Sele Their Doom?

Having insufficiently few aging, declining starters, the Rangers are in talks with Aaron Sele. The Rangers are also close to closing deals with David Delucci and Greg Colbrunn, leaving Texas Rangers Blog with a very bad feeling about the offense next year.

A's Deal Mulder

Oakland has dealt Mark Mulder to the Cardinals, for starter Danny Haren, reliever Kiko Calero, and AA catching prospect Daric Barton, according to both mlb.com and ESPN. Considering the hype surrounding Jeremy Brown (who appears to have stalled at AA) as well as the first-round selection Kurt Suzuki, you'd think the A's would be less-than-eager to take on another backstop, especially at the middle levels. This is a good deal for the Cards, but I wonder how good it is for the A's. It hasn't hit AN just yet... they're still mourning the loss of Hudson. Update: AN open thread. Blez speculates Beane could see the bell curve on the wall, and dealt his horses while the market was hot as it was likely to get.

Ken Rosenthal speculates that the A's may move Zito soon, too. Of all the postseason maneuvering the A's have done, this is by far the most extensive and the most interesting. I've long thought that the A's would be in serious trouble if they had to pay retail for their starting rotation; maybe this is Beane's way of saying that pitching is now overvalued. If so, the parts he got back don't seem to be especially valuable.

Midnight Modifications To Dodger Deal

Depo's burning the midnight oil: ESPN claims that, in addition to the swaps listed earlier, the Dodgers will get Arizona reliever Mike Koplove in the deal as well. Still waiting for the part where we get a good player in all this.

Leone For Third Analyzes The Market

... and concludes it's way oversold, handing ridiculous contracts to mediocrities while "cream of the crop" players take less than they might have otherwise liked. I wonder if this may be due to the reports of collusion that have supposedly been quelled by way of a paper trail.

Comments:
What is Texas Rangers Blog's problem? An infield of Teixeira, Young, Soriano and Blalock plus the addition of Hidalgo? What kind of offense is he looking for? Jeez...
