The San Bernardino Sun writes that the Dodgers failed to come to terms with catcher Brent Mayne. Mayne will most likely retire. Dioner Navarro, the return in a proposed trade of Shawn Green to the Diamondbacks, is not expected to be ready to play at the major league level by spring training, but he might see time at the big club in 2005.
In that same article, Shawn Green's bonus money in his current contract is apparently a sticking point with the Diamondbacks. He's owed as much as $850,000 in various performance incentives.
The expiration and reinstatement of the Green trade has changed the terms of the deal, according to Steven Henson in the Times. The Dodgers have upped the cash to the Snakes to $10M from $8M, and Arizona will now send two additional pitching prospects in addition to prospects Navarro and Juarez. The Arizona Republic says the Diamondbacks have given negotiating authority on the Green trade to Southern California-based attorney Mark Rosenthal.
In that same Republic article, the Snakes are hopeful to acquire Shawn Estes (why?) as a fourth starter, and if early reports of a Beltran signing in Shea are correct, to also acquire centerfielder Mike Cameron. The 32-year old Cameron is recovering from has wrist surgery and would not be available to play until April.
A non-player related signing: the Cardinals have re-upped Tony LaRussa, for three years.
