Pickoff Moves

Dodgers, Gagne Working On Extension

The Dodgers and Eric Gagne are working on an extension, according to Rich Hammond at the Daily News. The Dodgers are expected to sign Gagne to a two-year deal expected to be worth around $20M.

Also: Paul Bako's signing was not made official, so nobody on the 40-man roster has been moved yet. That is expected some time today.

Write This Day Down On Your Calendar

Scott Boras, on sending his charge Derek Lowe to the Dodgers:
"In two other places we were offered more money. We really felt he could be outstanding in a National League environment, and we really focused on L.A. from the start. In the end, I told Paul that we'd take a little less money to come here.

Hee!

Those Beastly Bullpens

Studes at Hardball Times take a quick look at bullpens around the majors using Win Probability Added (WPA) and Fielding-Independent Pitching. Results: the Angels and Dodgers have two of the best bullpens in the majors, with the Angels coming in first twice, and the Dodgers scoring first by WPA and second by FIP. Good to hear, especially considering the Dodgers haven't touched their bullpen in the offseason.

He No Batter

Jon's happy to wax lyrical over the recent addition to the Times' sportswriting stable, Tim Brown. This caused me to go over to the LA Weekly and see what they were doing... while you don't expect the same sort of daily coverage of sports you'd get at the Times or the Daily News, you would think that the usual irritable press syndrome that causes weeklies to hurl brickbats through the 1st St. offices would cause them to also try for halfway thoughtful coverage of the Dodgers. But you'd be wrong.

Hold The Needling: Baseball To Get Tough On Steroids. No, We Mean It

There will be random offseason testing, more frequent testing, and suspensions for first-time offenders. Second-time offenders will be required to wear a star of Balco on their uniforms, and sent to reeducation camps in Arizona. (Just kidding on that last one. Kind of.) One of the first randomly chosen players will be Barry Bonds. (That one, too.)

Thank God Almighty

The Dodgers spring training schedule is here at last! Likewise, you can buy spring training tickets for the Angels, although the guys at MLB.com seem a little confused as to how to spell "Anaheim" properly:

ST logo with Anaheim misspelled

Comments:
They get partial credit because that is the way Anaheim should be spelled.
