Yup, It's Last Week Again

"Wait... when did it become last week again?"

Now, Richard. It's last week again, now:

The Dodgers are believed to be closing in on a revised and dramatically scaled-down version of the three-team trade from which they abruptly withdrew last week. Officially, this one isn't a three-team trade at all, but it certainly smacks of one.

According to multiple sources, the club is negotiating to trade first baseman/outfielder Shawn Green to Arizona, along with about $8 million, for catching prospect Dioner Navarro and possibly one or two others.

Several reports have the Dodgers also receiving either pitcher Matt Halsey or third baseman Eric Duncan, whom the Diamondbacks are expected to receive from the New York Yankees in exchange for five-time Cy Young Award winner and certain future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson. A high-rtanking [sic] baseball official said Friday that the Dodgers might trade Green for Navarro, which would clear $8 million of payroll to go after starting pitching.

This deal is dependent on the Diamondbacks completing the Johnson trade, without which they won't have Navarro, Halsey or Duncan to deal. The Diamondbacks reportedly are unwilling to trade Johnson without getting Green, which makes the two trades interdependent.

It's ... the ... same ... fargin' ... deal! Well, almost: the Dodgers wouldn't have to give up Brad Penny, Kazuhisa Ishii, or Brandon Weeden in this scenario, and the Snakes hang on to Vazquez, possibly until the trade deadline so as to maximize his value (if you can call trading a pitcher with a 9.53 ERA in the postseason "value"). From the Dodgers' end of things, this makes some sense in that Green's nowhere near to justifying the $16M he's going to earn this year. ("This year" has a funny sound to it, doesn't it?) But the utility of the trade remains to be seen -- if it gets off the ground -- and DePo can turn around and get some help from the pitching end of things by way of trades.

You can lose your mind in the offseason reading this stuff. (I can only imagine how the players manage.) At least now the Yankees can gripe about the Snakes backing out of trades if they don't get Johnson because the Dodgers refused to move Shawn Green. Can we just get to the regular season? Or spring training?
