Hero Worship
Got my 2005 edition of Baseball Prospectus today. From the Dodgers section:
DePodesta still had some issues at hand. Like many GMs new to their jobs, he inherited a few serious dog-food contracts. Darren Dreifort and Kevin Brown, the two most damning relics, are finally off the books.Good grief, Dreif even appears in the section on Dodgers pitching. I know, maybe he meant the club was getting insurance to pay his contract -- or most of it, anyway -- but it's not all of it. I haven't looked too closely at the rest of it yet, but it does seem to me that DePodesta sometimes gets a free ride from certain people all too eager to manufacture justifications for certain signings or trades who view DePo as a white knight of the SABR banner. I don't see it, and while I agree with many of his moves, the possibility he might not always know what he's doing or has to make the best of defensive moves also beckons.
Comments:
Now that comments are working once again.
The piece on the Dodgers was almost nauseating. Almost enough fawning to find work as Disney animator. In the last couple of years, the quality of BP's has become increasingly erratic. For an outfit that built its reputation on critical thinking and analysis, they're almost ripe for some good parody.
FWIW - I understand the Dodgers piece was written by Huckaby.
