Angels-57-27+54=4, White Sox 0

The Angels website says Ervin Santana's designated number is 74, but his 54, three off the disabled K-Rod's team number, was just enough tonight. More than enough, in fact. Santana bounced back from his awful debut outing where he gave up six earned runs and three walks in a measely four innings. To make up for it, he pitched a four-five-hit complete game shutout. Waltzing between his three pitches, Santana dazzled the red hot Chisox and melted them utterly. Santana will probably get another start with the injury to Kelvim Escobar, and then get sent down to AAA Salt Lake. As the AP game recap noted, Santana is the youngest Angels player to throw a complete game shutout since Jim Abbott threw a four-hit shutout against Boston and Roger Clemens on ... May 17, 1989.

For the offense: AK doubled home two, and Benjie singled and slammed a solo shot to dead center (only his third of the year) for the other two runs. The still-threadbare offense has some glimmers of life that may or may not be enough to carry the team for the next couple weeks.

To the Sox: Garland wasn't bad, but neither was he especially good, collecting little more than the minimum for a quality start. Their hitting, not really among the top power-hitting clubs as they have been of late years, was stymied by a case of rookiepitcheritis.

I won't take credit for it -- I'll probably watch the Angels get slammed the other two games of this series -- but I will say this: somebody has to fell the Chisox. It has to happen. If the team that does it is the Angels (contra my premonition), so be it.

Comments:
Hey Rhi! I'll also point out that the ChiSox haven't had the toughest schedule to date, with six against Kansas City, three against Tampa, six against Cleveland, three against Seattle, and three against Detroit to pad their lead. I honestly don't think they'll keep winning at the rate they've been winning when they face a bit stiffer competition. (Though they are blessed with 18 or 19 games vs. the Royals every year.)

Peekaboo, Rhi! I see you!
