Cabrera's Saving Grace: Angels 5, Indians 4

One. Lousy. Run.

If it isn't for AK and his inaugural 2005 high bouncing infield single that drove in Cabrera, we're still playing this game. But AK became an offensive force tonight, not quite in that ALCS Game 5 way, but enough to keep the Angels from losing ground to Texas, who beat the Tigers by the same 5-4 score at home.

Was Byrd really good or did the team catch Cleveland in a weak moment? Over the last week, Cleveland scored 23 runs to the Angels' 16 (worst in the league, by the way), so we tip the cap to Byrd and compliment him on his good efforts. I still think he has potential.

What is this thing about Josh Paul getting a home run? Does he need more or fewer at bats? In all, the team had a good outing against a C.C. Sabathia who's mostly had his way against opponents so far this year.

Shields was unusually good, even for his typically excellent standards. Frankie's home run -- well, somehow I knew it was a possibility. He can't seem to go with giving up a solo shot every now and then, but then he settled down and struck out the next two. And of course Cabrera's amazing recovery of that screaming grounder to short -- no way Eckstein gets that, better hitting or no. But at $8M/year for that, I woulda preferred to keep Eckstein and upgraded the bench.

Recap

Comments:
Not sure about Eckstein. Wasn't the argument in favor always better positioning and range? Seriously, I'm very happy with Cabrera's defense, but I'm not convinced that Eckstein doesn't make that play, though I'm not convinced that he does, either. I had to watch this one on the computer, so I didn't get a great look.

Better positioning, maybe, but much worse range.

Not according to MGL's numbers.

Eckstein's Rate2: 103
Cabrera's Rate2: 114

I guess they're all flawed in some way, but I don't think it's clear at all that Eckstein has superior range.
