Pickoff Moves, Late Nite Edition

About a zillion little stories tonight, so let's get busy --

LAPD Agrees To Police Dodger Games

Well, that didn't take very long. Starting next Friday.

Tony Peña Resigns As Royals Manager

No surprise there, he may remain with the club in some other capacity. Great incoherent quote:
"I feel that at this time we have not played to the top of our abilities," Pena said in a statement released by the team. "The Kansas City Royals are on the right track by committing to their young players, and I believe the Royals will be contenders for a long time if they don't change their direction."
Contenders, I suppose, for the number of consecutive years with the worst record.

Yankees Bad News

Jason Giambi might be sent down to the minors, crazy as that sounds. I can only imagine the kind of firestorm that's gonna create in Tampa. Of course, he can't be forced into it, but the Boss must dream of such stuff.

Former Giants reliever Felix Rodriguez has injured his knee, and the Yankees recommend he have surgery to repair it. He would be sidelined 4-6 weeks if he has it.

Sammy Sosa To DL

Sammy Sosa went on the DL with an abcess and a staph infection on his foot. Sosa is currently hitting .269/.325/.454 with four home runs in 108 at bats, appearing in 27 games. Sosa missed his last four starts because of his foot problem.

A's Disable Kiko Calero

Oakland disabled reliever Kiko Calero, with elbow tendinitis. He is replaced with Tim Harikkala in the lineup.

Giants Disable Jason Schmidt

of Jason Schmidt

The Giants put Jason Schmidt on the 15-day DL, with a strained right shoulder, retroactive to Sunday.
"I figured better now than later, get it taken care of," said Schmidt, who expects to return when the stint on the DL ends. "I just kind of felt I wasn't doing a whole lot to help this team right now. I wasn't at my best. Instead of fighting through it, let's get it taken care of right now. It's the end of the season that counts."

Brad Hennessey is the likely callup in Schmidt's absence.

Schmidt threw 451 pitches in four games, but lasted only 24 innings. Fahrenschmidt 451?
