Pickoff Moves

More On Kendry Morales, Stephen Marek

The Times, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Riverside Press-Enterprise, and minorleaguebaseball.com all have stories up about Kendry. Kendry's delay was nothing compared to his just getting here:
[Agent John] DiManno said his client, distraught over his circumstances, tried to defect "like eight times," getting caught and jailed on three occasions for up to five days. Other arrangements fell through or plans were scrapped.

Morales successfully defected last June, arriving in Miami on a boat with 18 others. He then traveled to Nicaragua before gaining citizenship in the Dominican, which allowed him to obtain free-agent status and avoid the draft.

Which may not have turned out to be such a good idea, as subsequent Cuban refugees decided they liked the U.S. better.

Stephen Smith updates us with regards to both Kendry's night last night, throwing some cold water on his unassisted double play: "Morales did all right defensively, although he did fail to backhand a throw to complete a double play, allowing the batter to reach base." But more importantly was his discrediting of an earlier Baseball America report that Stephen Marek was actually signed. According to Bill Stoneman, not so much; they seem to have a verbal agreement but nothing more.

More Stupid Trades

Is Tim Brown's Mike Lowell proposal really as bad as FJT thinks it is? Too many years over a decline phase; Brown normally doesn't fall for dumb ideas, but this qualifies (unless you can convince the Marlins to eat some of his salary).

Dirtbags 6, Titans 1

SS Evan Longoria drove in three to tie the weekend series at one apiece; from what I understand, this means CSULB still has a shot at going to the postseason. The road win at Fullerton happened in front of 3,554.

Recap

Bonds Watch

Is Barry using his injury as a proxy for retirement? It's a theory ESPN Page 2 writer Skip Bayless recently advanced. As conspiracies go, I'll give this one a pass, though you might find more ammunition in a quote from this San Francisco Chronicle story:
"I still have a lot to live for, outside of baseball," he said. "I still want to have a healthy life. I feel I've done a lot in the game of baseball, and there is a lot more that I want to do. But I have to take care of this first. ... I want to be able to catch my daughter at 6 years old. She can outrun me."
Trainer Stan Conte says "I think there's a possibility we will see him this year", which isn't what you'd call a definitive assertion.

Phil Rogers Sounds The "Trade Eric" Klaxon

With Moneyball came a number of overblown generalizations, but one of the biggest was the sell-the-closer hook, which Phil Rogers pumps again now that Yhency Brazoban has made Gagné look redundant in some eyes:
Scouts around the majors wonder if DePodesta might again use a bullpen surplus to rebuild for the stretch run, this time moving Gagne or Brazoban for a starting pitcher.
"Surplus"? After last night's game? Heck, after the last week?

Update: yes, I know I may be cited under §38 of the Baseball Blogger's code for bandwagon jumping; mea culpa.

Comments:
i saw the dirtbags play earlier in the season against cal, when they got swept in a rainy doubleheader by my alma mater. the didn't look like much of a team that day, but it seems they've turned it around since. but i did kinda wonder, and since you mention him here, i'll say it aloud, if evan longoria is in any way related to the mega-hot eva, of housewife fame. probably not, eh.

I yield to no one in suspicion of Barry Bonds. But a bone infection in an area of the body with recent surgery is no joke, as Bonds' period of 24-hour IV antibiotics clearly shows. Such infections can destroy cartilage and bone; if allowed to spread, the infection is hypothetically life-threatening. They also take a long time to cure; and other therapy, such as rehab, cannot take place in earnest until the infection is cleared up. The infection should, on its own, delay Bonds' return an additional 6-8 weeks.

Vishal -- probably not.

Ratt -- Some are already saying he's done for, period. True? We'll have to wait and see. I hate those words.
