Byrd In Flight: Angels 5, Rangers 1
As happy as Rich and Richard must have been to go see Jered Weaver make his professional debut in Lake Elsinore, tonight's game in Anaheim was just amazing. Paul Byrd turned in his first complete game in three years, his first career win against the Rangers, and better still, in the postgame interview, he reported no pain at all with his tricep. He had them all off balance the whole night.
The Rangers made one appallingly bad play, and naturally enough it was Alfonso Soriano who blew it: a routine ground ball from Benjie Molina in the seventh that squirted between his legs, Bill Buckner-style. The Angels failed to capitalize on it, sadly, but the error was Soriano's twelfth of the year. Ow.
Aside from the flying-on-air performance by Byrd, two guys need upbraiding for their awfulness:
- Dallas McPherson, for striking out twice (again), and making a bonehead baserunning move on a Maicer Izturis walk. Just. Dumb.
- Steve Finley, for coming within one of a golden sombrero. It's almost the All-Star break, Steve. Get it going.
