Unwatchable: Padres 1, Dodgers 0
At least the Dodgers only gave up a single run.
The Dodgers are having too many of these kinds of games. This is just garbage. Seven straight losses. Normally, I refuse to root for one team or another in interleague when the Dodgers play the Angels, but at this point, I want the Angels to stomp all over the Dodgers. As expected, Paul DePodesta finds a well of misplaced optimism:
"Look, it's been well-documented that injuries are having a significant role. That said, in the last six games we could be 4-2 if we didn't make a mistake or [if we] got a runner in," DePodesta said.... thus pointing out the fundamental weakness of the bench, eh?
"I've never been involved in a club that had this many players hurt. It's affected every part of the club for a long time," he said. "We've had 15 disabling injuries and none came back after 15 days. We've lost guys for months, not weeks. I've never been around anything this widespread and lengthy. It just requires patience."C'mon, give it up. The bullpen hasn't had that many injuries (unless you count Dessens), and it's gone kablooie, too, and a lot. It's as much about talent as it is about injuries. Forget about the postseason, this team needs to prove it's even better than .500 at this point. They're now five and a half games back of the Pads, and if things keep going like this, it'll be a lot more by the All-Star break.
Update: If the Dodgers were a little bit better off, I'd say it was time to kick Jayson Werth off Dodger Island. He's just not contributing, the "extended spring training" excuse is running out, and dammit, I need to kick somebody.
Overall, your point is right - they need to prove they're a .500 team now. But this wasn't one of "those kinds of games". Peavy and Penny provided a super duel, with Peavy great to Penny's being good.
I've developed a mental blind spot about Gagné and Alvarez; they don't exist anymore. Will Carroll makes it sound like Gagné's done for the year, anyway.
Two bench players are starting OFs plus the backup MI and RH pinch hitter are playing every day.
The current bench isn't great, but let's not confuse the 'theoretical' Perez/Saenz/Ledee bench with the 'actual' Edwards/Robles/Repko bench.
