Quash Those Trade Rumors
In an article about Adam Kennedy's knee brace (he's hitting better since the injury mysteriously cleaned itself up, seven months to the day after the surgery), the Angels have cooled down any trade talks with the Royals over Mike Sweeney. The reason?
Royal owner David Glass, according to a league source, is strongly considering retaining the first baseman, who is batting .298 with nine homers and 37 RBIs, and Kansas City is believed to be seeking at least three players, a combination of young major leaguers and premium prospects, for Sweeney, a steep price for a slugger who is signed through 2007 at $11 million a year. Those looking for other wacky trade proposals need search no further than the Halosphere. Sean engages in some "irresponsible rumormongering" by suggesting a trade of "Jarrod Washburn (trade and sign), Casey Kotchman, and Brandon Wood OR Erick Aybar OR Alberto Callaspo" for Barry Bonds. Assuming this goes down at the trade deadline, the Giants would be fools to do it; they've strung along their fans for too long with the implicit assumption that they must be in "win now" mode with Bonds' career in twilight. That would be a massive break in faith with the fan base, and only a huge disgorging of the Angels' vaunted farm system would be worth it. I'm not sure that is enough, really; to make this trade work, you'd have to change those ORs to ANDs.
Another potential problem with this scenario is that the presumptive reason Kotchman is available -- Kendry Morales. Morales has two major flaws:
- Morales really doesn't have a fielding position, and may have to end up as a perma-DH. Kotchman fields his position cleanly; I'm pretty sure I don't want the Angels to need a J.T. Snow type (or God forbid, retain Erstad, who has essentially become him).
- Morales remains untested above single-A. He is thus far 0-7 in his two games with the Travelers. Not that I expect him to stay that way, but the world is awash in AAAA types; let us find out what he is really made of once he advances to higher levels.
