First Pass: Semi-Automated Minor League Scores
This is a long post because it goes back to the 7/8, the day after the last pass I made at this. We'll see how well it works in the future; I plan on making this fully automated, including bot posting. BTW, there are a couple several bugs I know about, so don't bother writing about them:
2005-07-09: Wichita 4, Arkansas 5 (Completed Early: Doubleheader)
2005-07-11: Arkansas 0, San Antonio 3
2005-07-08: Cedar Rapids 5, Quad Cities 2
2005-07-09: Las Vegas 0, Portland 5 (Completed Early: Doubleheader)
2005-07-09: Las Vegas 6, Portland 3 (Completed Early: Doubleheader)
2005-07-09: Montgomery 11, Jacksonville 1
2005-07-11: Clearwater 2, Vero Beach 3
2005-07-09: Columbus 14, Asheville 9
2005-07-11: GCL Nationals 6, GCL Dodgers 1
2005-07-08: Casper 8, Ogden 5
Links to the pitchers' individual stats pages don't work properly yet.Fixed.For some reason, it missed Kendry Morales' good 7/8 game wherein he got 4 RBIs with a home run and a double.(I don't currently care about extra-base hits, but that, too, could change.) Fixed 7/14.- It's still picking up opposition players in some cases, which I could generally care less about.
Days off don't get listed.Fixed.- It's friggin' long. Tricks like those Ken Arneson used on the Baseball Toaster to expand and collapse comments will probably be invoked in the future.
- The definition of "interesting" is somewhat variable, but I expect it will evolve over time. For now, offensively, if a hitter has a home run, that's interesting. Two or more walks or hits are interesting. For pitchers, winning or losing is interesting, as is getting more strikeouts than walks (for two or more innings pitched).
- I hope to expand this to include weekly and monthly summaries for individual players.
- I would also like to publish game-by-game logs for each player the same way ESPN does for major leaguers.
- Like I said, fully automated posting. Hands off as possible.
- There's no list of "players to watch" here. That should be seeded to some degree from the lists of Baseball America, but also there ought to be a way to flag bursts of good play and add those players to the list. Here I'm thinking of guys like Michael Collins and Aaron Peel.

Comments:
No, actually the story was long and ugly. (Warning: technical details follow.) I started looking at the minorleaguebaseball.com website HTML output over the weekend, and it turned out they have this hopelessly elaborate content distribution mechanism that only a real Java CS weenie could love. The catch is that there is no parseable HTML for any of the games, user stats, or team stats. This is because they have a series of Javascript scripts containing each day's raw data. A master script then uses the game code for an individual game to include that data and shove it through a presentation function, which uses Javascript document.write() to produce the result you see. This tends to make it extremely opaque to most crawlers, so I imagine it puts them off. So the thing to do is to find and parse the individual game data files.
That is to say, I wish there were RSS available.
