Houlton Holdup: Giants 4, Dodgers 3
Schmidt was bad but not so bad he didn't have enough to get a win out of it. Against a real major league lineup he would have had some problems, but the Dodgers offered him no such challenges; reports that he might get traded to the Chisox have dimmed since his rocky starts of late. For the Dodgers, Houlton put together a few good innings, and new callup Steve Schmoll did pretty well for himself. If not for Houlton leaving a belt-high fastball over the plate, the Dodgers win this one. Blech.
I've said before that the silver lining of this black-draped cloud of a season is the potential of high draft picks next year. That may not be all. Oscar Robles, while still hitting over his head, is turning into a useful spare part; so is Antonio Perez, and even Mike Edwards. Since all of them are infielders, I have to believe that one or more of them will be gone later in the year for some other piece, unless DePodesta can convince Tracy to put at least one of them in the outfield. Perez is fast enough that you could almost try it. Jason Grabowski clearly is over his head in the big leagues, and isn't likely, after two years, to get a third shot at it, so the team needs another fourth (or fifth) outfielder. Position aside, the Dodgers have the makings of a very solid bench for 2006 already in place.
