Hurts So Good: Rockies 8, Dodgers 5

Wunsch reacts to his injury

The Dodgers can't catch a break -- unless, of course, it's a broken wrist. Today's collapse came on the heels -- okay, bad pun -- of another injury, this time in the most bizarre failure imaginable. Starter Derek Lowe was running out of gas, and proved it by walking .210-hitting J.D. Closser. Tracy then pulled Lowe for Giovanni Carrara, who threw to Luis Gonzalez -- the bad one. Gonzalez sac bunted Closser to second, and then Carrara proved his maddening inconsistency by plunking leadoff man Cory Sullivan. So much for Carrara, Tracy says, and then makes a call to the bullpen. Only, no phone. Only, LOOGY Kelly Wunsch, who had been warming up in the bullpen, twisted his ankle on his last warmup pitch. Fortunately for Tracy, Franquelis "Spanish For Run Donor" Osoria had also been warming up. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, Osoria then gave up a three-run homer to Todd Helton 442 feet away to the second deck.

The real embarrassment was the Dodgers losing to Mike DeJean. That, and the garbage keystone (Cops) combo of Oscar Robles and Antonio Perez gave up about three outs on some lousy throws in the fifth.

Yeah, Kelly, "Hurts So Good" was a premonition. So, how bad is that injury?

Tracy called the injury a subluxation of the peroneal tendon, then gave a clue about the prognosis when he said, "It's the same thing [Curt] Schilling dealt with," and he hasn't pitched since April. The popping Wunsch felt is probably the tendon popping out of the supporting ligaments. He could be out a while.
I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.

Update: I note Will Carroll's comment that "Bradley is not making any progress in his rehab ... surgery is likely the next option." Combine that with BP's Notebook today:

Dodgers fans must hope that Kent won't miss too much time and help keep the Dodger boat afloat. If he does miss some time, given the aforementioned tight pack in the NL West, the Dodgers stand a good chance of slipping past the Rockies into last place, rather than competing for another division crown.
No kidding. Ouch, and ouch again.

Recap

Comments:
Yeah, actually that's probably right. There's enough distance between first place San Diego and second place Arizona that it's unlikely the Dodgers could hand Arizona the division by whupping up on the Pads.

Now, that's a Dirty Sanchez!

Priceless caption on the Wunsch photo, Rob.
