2005-07-23: Las Vegas 0, Salt Lake 4 (Completed Early: Doubleheader)
2005-07-23: Las Vegas 7, Salt Lake 6 (Completed Early: Doubleheader)
Kotchman: 1-2, 1 HR
Saunders: (W, 1-1), 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 7 K, 4 BB, 3.29 ERA
A seven-inning complete game shutout by Saunders with one strikeout for every inning pitched, Saunders' second game for the Stingers went about as well as could be expected. He also surrendered four hits in the abbreviated doubleheader.

Kotchman's solo home run is well-timed. Keep it coming, Kotch.
Callaspo, A: 2-3, 3 RBI
Pride: 0-1, 3 BB
Pavkovich: 2-4, 3 RBI
Cyr: 5.2 IP, 3 ER, 5.18 ERA
Jones: (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 3 ER, 0 K, 1 BB, 3.09 ERA
All of Salt Lake's scoring would be done in the fourth in another seven-inning game, the second half of this doubleheader. Collaspo doubled and drove in three, while Kotchman went 1-4 with a strikeout. Jeff Mathis was brought in to pinch hit and delivered a single. Greg Jones, promoted from AA Arkansas in June, quadrupled his earned runs with Salt Lake on the three surrendered here.

Kendrick, H: 2-4
Murphy: 2-3
James: 3.2 IP, 1 ER, 1 K, 3 BB, 5.20 ERA
Pullin: (W, 2-6) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 K, 2 BB, 5.12 ERA
O'Sullivan: 2.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.60 ERA
Higher level? Where is it? One of Howie Kendrick's hits was a double, and even Kendry Morales got in some action, going 1-3. It's unclear from the writeup, but I assume starter Delvin James was previously on the DL, as today's start was his first action for Arkansas since June 12, hence the babying.

Sugden: 0-3, 2 BB
Wood, B: 2-3, 1 HR
Brown: 2-2, 2 BB
Rodriguez, R: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 K, 0 BB, 3.89 ERA
Touchstone: (W, 4-5) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 BB, 8.15 ERA
Thompson: 1.1 IP, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB, 5.26 ERA
Okay, now Wood's back on track: that would be home run number 34 for Brandon. As Derrick Lee has hit 32, that means Wood still leads professional baseball in dingers. Rafael Rodriguez's ERA continues in a good direction despite the two earned runs; he didn't walk anybody, but managed five strikeouts. He had a lot of trouble early with the Cal League, but seems to be adjusting. Also, 3B Matt Brown tripled.

Madrigal: 2-4
Walston: 1-4, 1 HR
Cordova: (L, 3-4), 5.0 IP, 5 ER, 2 K, 1 BB, 3.56 ERA
Gonzalez: 2.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 0 BB, 6.31 ERA
Warner Madrigal doubled in this game, but he's just plain struggling this year with a .226/.268/.398 line in 279 AB. Earlier this year, Alan Matthews said "he needs to come back, make adjustments at the plate and push his way up the ladder"; so far, it's not looking good, and with all the middle infield depth the Angels have, he's even more star-crossed.

Ojeda: 1.1 IP, 1 ER, 0 K, 2 BB, 3.21 ERA
If you can't beat 'em in the Show, beat 'em in the minors: Both Kemp's dingers were solo shots. For a sixth-rounder, Matt Kemp is having some solid seasons. His 21 home runs pace Vero Beach, and not by a little; second on the team is Anthony Raglani with eight.

Comments:
Actually, Wood has 34 homers. He hit two in the Wednesday night game in Bakersfield. Those were #'s 32 and 33.
It will be interesting to see what they will do with this middle infield talent.
If Kendrick is a true 2B and needs to stay there, maybe Wood moves to 3B - or maybe stays at SS while D-Mac blossoms and Kotch matures and you have an infield in 2007 of:
Kotch, Kendrick, Wood and D-Mac. All under 27. I feel like Homer Simpson at a Winchell's.
Wishful thinking. It will probably still be Erstad, Kennedy, OC and Figgy because they are all so scrappy.
