Pickoff Moves
Two Wins? Cubs 8, Cardinals 4
Man, do I hate it when the umpires screw up a call, and there were a couple of those in this ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game. One was when Jose Macias apparently hit into a double play -- but then Albert Pujols' foot came off the bag, yet first base umpire C. B. Bucknor missed it completely. The second, far more important one, was when Hector Luna stole second in the ninth with two outs. Neifi Perez tagged him out, which should have been the third out of the inning and the game, but second base umpire Phil Cuzzi also missed that one. David Eckstein subsequently singled to send Luna home, tying the game, 4-4. Closer Ryan Dempster then gave up a single to Abraham Nunez, but got Albert Pujols to ground out.The Cubs, then, needed some big heroics in the tenth. Todd Walker would lead off with a double, so the Cards, with Al Reyes on the mound, decided to take the bat out of Derek Lee's hands, facing Jeromy Burnitz. Burnitz, rather than hitting into a double play, layed down a perfect bunt between the pitcher and catcher, moving the runners over. One out. Reyes, deciding it best to take his chances with Neifi Perez, then walked Aramis Ramirez, who had homered earlier in the game.
Neifi hit a grand slam on the first pitch straight down the right field line.
So, under those circumstances, shouldn't the Cubs get two wins out of this game?
Update 7/25: Al Yellon has a good piece about this crazy game.
