Pickoff Moves
Mad Dog Gets 3,000 K's
I didn't see it, and surprisingly, neither did the wife, who was out at a screening, but Rich Lederer dropped a note to let me know he was in Chitown to witness something exceeding rare: Greg Maddux's 3,000th strikeout. He has done it without being a strikeout king like Nolan Ryan or Roger Clemens, and he has done it with perhaps the best control of any of them; in his long career, Maddux has only issued 894 walks, the first pitcher to achieve 300 wins and 3,000 strikeouts to do so. I expect a report in full upon his return.More On Valentin's Sore Elbow
At least his knee's not hurting him: Jose Valentin was recently in town to have an MRI on his throwing elbow which was diagnosed as a mild sprain. There's no announced timetable for his return, but additional trouble with his elbow could jeopardize Tracy's suggested position change for Valentin to the outfield.Good News For The Angels: More Yankee Injuries
Kevin Brown continues to have trouble with his back, and Carl Pavano's return date has been pushed back beyond the weekend series with the Angels, according to the Times.Quote, Unquote
That made it easier to accept," Schoeneweis said, referring to his contract. "These guys wanted me solely for the bullpen with the option to start. I'm at a point in my career where I just want to be good at something and help the team win, and this is how I can help the team most."-- Chronic whiner and Scott Boras client Scott Schoeneweis, on his role with Toronto
D-Mac's Return Delayed Again
Forget all the optimistic talk earlier: it looks like Dallas McPherson's return has been pushed back at least a week. He started swinging a bat again on Monday. Stephen Smith and I had an e-mail exchange yesterday in which he informed me that Dallas has had back problems during his minor league career, and if anyone should get the tag of "injury risk", it's D-Mac, not Kotchman.Cold Pizza: UTK Leftovers
Some leftovers I forgot to mention from yesterday's UTK:- Troy Glaus isn’t just dealing with the chronic knee problem. Now, back spasms have forced him out of the lineup. It’s possible that the two are interrelated but since Glaus has had minor back problems previously, it’s impossible to tell. The D-Backs are relying on Paul Lessard and his staff to keep an increasingly creaky lineup out on the field and productive. Whatever Dallas McPherson's troubles are, Glaus's are worse at this point. Chalk one up for Stoneman for letting him walk.
- Peter Gammons broke the news that Adam Eaton won’t be able to throw breaking balls due to his hand/finger problem and will be relegated to the bullpen. Eaton had some effect from a second cortisone shot that quickly wore off. I’m a bit confused as to why Eaton couldn’t try starting without his breaking stuff, but I won’t second guess Towers and Bochy on something they obviously have a lot more information and feel on. This helps us understand why Sidney Ponson was a need for the Pads. More ammo for the Stooge Division idea, or as Jim Baker at Baseball Prospectus recently chose to call it, "the Mississippi public school system of baseball". Ouch.
Padres Thumped Behind The Dish
The Pads just can't put it together to run away with the division. More evidence of this came yesterday when it turned out that catcher Ramon Hernandez will need surgery on his left wrist. As a result, Phil Nevin donned the tools of ignorance in yesterday's 4-2 loss to the Cards.Newer› ‹Older
