Aside from the obvious connection to the horrid game Thursday against the Blue Jays, this game was lost the moment Scioscia called in Frankie for five outs. I would have stayed with Peralta or even Woods, simply because Frankie was obviously tired. He threw thirty six pitches, only 15 of which landed for strikes. This game was winnable, Mike. This game was winnable.By the way: about this: homers may not be a cure-all, but they sure as hell beat grounding out weakly to the second baseman:
Cabrera entered Saturday's game hitting .243 and was hitting .212 since June 15, but Scioscia is looking for that one trigger to get his offense back in line, and is hopeful this latest tinkering with the batting order will affect change.No, because Cabrera is on an early slide that he is not going to recover from. Sorry, the "changing leagues" nonsense doesn't apply simply because he isn't.
Speaking of bad hitting, Vlad looked awful again, particularly against Chacon. One of these days, probably in late August after all hope has evaporated, they'll finally admit to his shoulder injury and that he needs rest for several months to recuperate.
Big Angel thanks to Alan Embree and Felix Rodriguez, both of whom are not exactly answers in the pen. When Josh Paul doubles and Juan Rivera homer, you know something's wrong. As the Rev put it, this game was gift-wrapped for the Angels; they just refused to accept it.

- The Angels have called up Chris Bootcheck from AAA Salt Lake to make an emergency start tomorrow, and Jake "Not Ready For Prime Time" Woods was optioned the other way. Bootcheck, one senses, will get to wallow in his own mess for five innings or so before Scioscia pulls him for any reliever at this point. Well, unless it's Kevin Gregg and the score's 19-5.
- It sounds like Scott Erickson will accept a minor league assignment rather than becoming a free agent should he go unclaimed following his DFA.
- Also, former prospect and current suspect Joey "Another Reason Why I'm Skeptical Of The Dodgers' Farm" Thurston was traded to the Yankees for a PTBNL. How many of the same people prepping us for the Joey Thurston era at 2B are still in the farm system writing glowing scouting reports of their own prospects?
- Jayson Werth is feeling better now and thinks he may be able to play soon.
Update: WTF? The Times now says he can barely move his leg beyond 90 degrees and may need DL time.
- Derek Thompson had his Tommy John surgery, and will be back some time next year.
- Minnesota's Torii Hunter will miss 4-6 weeks due to a torn tendon in his ankle.
- I got a couple people writing to make sure I knew that the Padres had acquire Chan Ho Park from the Rangers, in exchange for 1B Phil Nevin.
- Mariners CF Jeremy Reed left Friday's game with a concussion. Reed finished the inning but was replaced later on by Willie Bloomquist.
- Update: The Rocks have had enough of Desi Relaford, DFAing him. OF Omar Quintanilla, acquired earlier in the trade with the A's.
- The Rocks moved Eric Brynes to the O's for Larry Bigbie. Presumably, they did not ask the Idiots as to the merits of this trade, but it sounds like a move of junk for junk.
- Besides the guys in the comments section, U.S.S. Mariner and the AP via ESPN report that Randy Winn has been moved to the Giants for RHP Jesse Foppert and C Yorvit Torrealba. USSM: "This is a terrific trade for the M’s, swapping a player they did not need for two potentially useful players who make nothing."
- Todd Helton will go on the DL for the first time in his major league career. He was replaced on the roster by Eddie Garabito. Also, Aaron Cook came up for the first time this year and pitched against the Phillies today; to make room, IF Anderson Machado was DFA'd. Seriously, isn't it time your checked your career-o-meter if you get DFA'd by the Rockies?
- Another one via U.S.S. Mariner, the M's and Padres have traded more spare parts in the guises of Miguel Olivo for Miguel Ojeda and Nathaniel Mateo. USSM: "Considering Ojeda can’t hit a lick, this would appear to be an Olivo dump, pure and simple."
- The Red Sox have acquired OF Jose Cruz, Jr. from the Diamondbacks, for INF Kenny Perez and RHP Kyle Bono, and cash. Cruz was DFA'd on Thursday.
