"Where we stand right now, there is a definite need to keep establishing depth on the pitching side," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "I know that's where Bill's looking. -- Jordan Bastian, MLB.comIt's fair to say that I expected some regression from Byrd after his phenominal first half; his weak 4.90 K/9 in the first half indicates he's anything but a dominant force on the mound, groundball outs notwithstanding, and so today he exploded against a hot-hitting Toronto team (fifth in the AL by team OPS). The real surprise was that Gregg somehow managed to avoid giving up any runs over three and a third innings despite surrendering two walks and three hits.
As the Rev noted, it's probably time to start thinking about unplugging Erstad from the number two hole, and maybe moving him to eighth. With Vlad also slumping (prior to today's game -- 3-4), that's one too many guys in the top three who aren't getting it done, so maybe time to shuffle things, especially with the team 9-9 since July 4.
